Transfer from Naples by ecological bus to Pompeii, where participants can enjoy an exclusive visit and a special welcome aperitif at the sunset.
Buried by about six metres of ash and lapilli following the eruption of Vesuvius in August 79 AD, the city was forgotten until between 1594 and 1600, when in seeking to build a canal to bring the waters of the Sarno to Torre Annunziata, the “Civita” hill was pierced and the ruins of buildings and inscriptions were discovered. But it wasn’t until 1748, under the reign of Charles of Bourbon, that the first explorations began.
Great impetus was given to excavations in the 19th century, bringing to light between 1806 and 1832 most of the public buildings in the Forum and some of the most important private homes, such as that of Pansa, of the Tragic Poet and of the Faun.
With the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, direction of the excavations was entrusted to Giuseppe Fiorelli, who systematically proceeded, simultaneously restoring and protecting the finds. Today, Pompeii represents one of Italy’s top destinations.
